What IS Dry Needling?

Dry Needling is nothing but Orthopedic Acupuncture; it is the insertion of acupuncture needle(s) in the trigger point using the technique called pistoning or sparrow pecking until the muscle releases.

It has become a hot topic over the last few yeas, after the physical therapist realized it works better and quicker than months of physical therapy and exercises alone.

DRY NEEDLING IS ILLEGAL IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA WHEN PERFORMED BY PHYSICAL THERAPISTS.

The difference in training between Dry Needling and Acupuncture?

Physical Therapist receive only 35-50 hours of training, do not take national boards exams and are not sufficiently trained to safely insert the acupuncture needle in the body.

Acupuncture Physicians (also note the difference in words Physical “Therapist” vs Acupuncture “Physician“) have thousands of hours of training, have to take national certification board exams and become LICENSED PHYSICIANS before practicing (acupuncture physicians are holistic primary care physicians in the State of Florida).

Dr. Smith received her Dry Needling training in China and can safely perform it.

Chinese doctors have been performing this technique for thousands of years, and due to the lack of good translation it was originally called “Jumping Qi” which nowadays translates into pistoning and sparrowing  trigger point until the muscle “jumps” / releases.
